Virgil Straeter initially joined Mr. Emmett Hostmeyer of Breese, Illinois In 1966 to form a partnership which lasted until Emmett’s death, in 1989. Virgil was just 16 years old when he started Auctioneering. It's therefore rare to find something for sale at Auction that Virgil hasn't seen before, but, when it does happen, he considers it a welcome challenge!

Virgil Straeter then formed Auction Associates in 1989, with the express intention of working with other Auctioneers in the area depending on the requirements for each auction. For example, if he contracted a Farm Auction including livestock, he would hire a local Auctioneer with livestock experience to assist  him. The same would hold true for unique collectibles or antiques etc. This formula has been highly successful and continues today.

Through the years Auction Associates has conducted numerous auctions and a wide variety of asset liquidations. For more than 30 years, there have been many auctions to liquidate and appraise assets for the Federal Bankruptcy Court. Assets such as Real Estate, Jewelry, Household Estates, commercial property, business asset liquidation etc. including but not limited to Walt Disney Collectibles, Printing Presses, Construction Equipment, Trucks, Trailers, Motorcycles, Campers and Lawn Equipment.

Virgil is a member of the Illinois Auctioneers Association, as well as a member of the National Auctioneers Association. He is currently the Governor of Dist. 8 for the Illinois Auctioneers Association. In that capacity he is also a Board Member and assists in discussions with the other Officers, to address new legislation, as well as challenges to the auctioneering industry.

Modern technology and electronics now has a firm presence in the auction business. All Auction Associates auctions now utilize computerized clerking and cashiering systems to record each item, protect sensitive information on registered bidders, and reconcile the auction proceeds at the close of the Auction. This is possible only with the use of a computerized database system during the sale!  (In the past it may have taken several days to balance out a sale, where today it is typical to have that information and the “report of sale” within an hour or two of the close of the Auction.)  Sellers can see a full report of the Registered Buyers, each item that is sold with the sale price of each item and who ended the sale of  each item as the winning bidder.

New technology and equipment are necessary in today’s Auction Business, to satisfy the documentation required by the Sellers, Attorneys, Taxing entities, whether it be sales tax, estate tax, or capital gains tax.  Keeping comprehensive, accurate records is a primary concern of Auction Associates, as well as the network of highly satisfied Buyers accumulated during our many years in the Auctioneering Business.
